Common questions
Are my photos uploaded?
No. Your browser opens them with its own HEIC decoder if it has one. If not, it downloads a decoder from this site once, and the decoding still happens on your device.
Is location data removed?
Yes. GPS position, camera details and other photo metadata are removed from every result. The original file is not changed.
What about a HEIC file with several images?
Each image becomes its own JPG or PNG, or its own page in a PDF, up to 50 images per file.
Are rotation and colours kept?
Yes. Photos come out the right way up, and iPhone wide-colour photos are converted so they look right everywhere. HDR brightness is not kept.
Which software does this use?
Where a browser has no decoder, this tool uses libheif and libde265, which are open source under the LGPL-3.0 licence. Their licence text and source links are published at /heic/LICENSE.txt and /heic/manifest.json.
